Dear Parents,
Welcome to Grade Eight. In Eighth Grade we focus on a theme of tolerance and acceptance. We study the Holocaust in its historical setting and in connection to reading the play The Diary of Anne Frank. We, at times, supplement our studies by going to Los Angeles to visit the Museum of Tolerance. Students also attend a retreat that helps them develop an awareness of social justice as well as enhances their growth in togetherness as a class. They "adopt" a child from the orphanage in Tijuana, El Hogar Infantil, and provide Christmas presents to brighten that child's holiday.
Language Arts: In preparation for a successful transition into high school, we focus on expository writing.
History: Students also participate in several simulations to study the history of the United States. Eighth graders research their family trees, connecting their families to our country's history of immigration.
Math: The students either study algebra or pre-algebra, according to their individual readiness. They continue their study of Spanish, begun in Seventh Grade.
Religion: Students also learn to play the chimes and present The Stations of the Cross to our school community.
These are just some of the highlights of Eighth Grade. I look forward to getting to know your child as we undertake a busy, yet productive and fulfilling year.
