Volunteering

Big 10 Committees

Are you still looking for ways to satisfy your service hours? Or do you want to get more involved with school activities? Well here is your opportunity! The Big 10 event offers both variety and fun. There are many different jobs that need to be filled to make this night a success, both prior to the event and on the night of the event. You can do as little or as much as you like.

Calling all Quilters - in early January all the class quilt squares are finished and the task of putting them together is at hand. If you enjoy quilting and are willing to sew one of the class quilts, consider volunteering for this activity.

Big 10 Drawdown Ticket coordination - we need a volunteer to process Big 10 ticket orders (reserve the ticket numbers, send out ticket confirmations, update listing of remaining available numbers).

Decoration committee members - we need a few volunteers to arrive about 4:30pm to set up table decorations the evening of the event.

Auction table committee members - we need a few volunteers to help close bidding tables between 8pm and 10:30pm the evening of the event.

Ticket sales after school and Mass - we need a few volunteers the last 2 weeks in February to sell Big 10 tickets after school at the pick-up area and after the Sunday morning Masses.

Guidelines for Bingo Workers

All Rate 2 families are required to do a portion of their service hours at Bingo. If you have one child enrolled, it is 10 hours. If you have two or more children enrolled, it is 15 hours. You may also choose to do all your service hours at Bingo.

What works best for staffing purposes and for consistency is if parents choose a team and work once a month. The commitment to a team is all year (June - May). If you are unable to commit to a year, please be specific regarding the dates and times you will be able to work at Bingo.

If working from June-May, one half of your Bingo hours must be completed by January 31, the other half by May 31.

If unable to work a scheduled shift, it is your responsibility to find a substitute or call the Bingo Coordinator (important)!

All hours worked at Bingo must be recorded in the binder located in Barry Hall during the night the hours are worked.

Only a parent, grandparent or relative may log in service hours for bingo work that will be creditied to a family for Rate 2 service hour requirements.

For more information contact Bingo Coordinators, Kathy and Chris Connors at (619) 593-2580.

Coaching

Volunteer Coaches Needed
Coaches, we need you! We have an extensive interscholastic athletic program at St. Martin of Tours Academy. Almost 90% of our students participate in school teams that are a part of the Diocesan Parochial Athletic League. We are looking for parents who are willing to volunteer for this very important work. Without volunteer coaches, SMA will not be able to field a team even if there are sufficient numbers of students willing to participate in a sport. Coaching is a wonderful service to our students. Coaches will establish their team's practice schedule.

Coaches have a great opportunity to work directly with students emphasizing good sportsmanship and character traits. Our "sports philosophy" is that being on a team means learning the rules, participating in all the games and practices, and having a good attitude about winning or losing. Participation should be fun and not highly pressured. If you are interested in coaching or co-coaching any of the athletic teams, please contact SMA Athletic Director, Diane Hartley at (619) 466-3241.

Athletics Program
Academy students may participate in the following competitive sports during the school year:

Fall Sports Winter Sports Spring Sports
Girls Volleyball (5-8)
Boys Football (5-8)
Girls Soccer (5-8)
Boys Basketball (5-8)
Pee Wee Soccer (K-4)
Girls Basketball (5-8)
Boys Soccer (5-8)

Game schedules for all sports can be found on the Parochial Sports website.

Field Trip Chaperones/Drivers

Most of the field trips scheduled for the school year rely on parents to provide transportation to and from the venues. If you are able to drive or would like to chaperone a field trip, please indicate so on the field trip permission form. You can contact the school office or your room parent(s) to advise them of your interest and availability.

Library

Volunteers are needed to read to the students and assist with check out. Volunteers are also needed to assist with book fairs.

Lunch Supervision

Volunteers are always needed to help supervise students during lunchtime. It's a fun way to get to know our students. If you are able to assist with lunchtime supervision, contact Ana Govan or the school office.

Morning Traffic Duty

Volunteers are needed to assist students getting out of cars during the morning drop-off period between 7:45 am - 8:15 am. Volunteers can record 1 hour of volunteer service time each day for this activity. To schedule your traffic duty days, contact Virginia Martin or the school office.

Traffic Procedures
DRIVE SLOWLY. Keep traffic moving in a single line. Pull forward to "Drop Off/Pick Up" sign. Children should be ready for immediate drop off or pick up.

Children must exit or enter cars from the passenger side only.

Parents may park along the parking lot wall if they wish to walk their child(ren) up to the school or conduct business in the school office.

All pedestrians should walk along the west wall of the parking lot only. This walkway is marked off with traffic cones. Children (grades K-6) are not allowed to walk unsupervised through any area of the parking lot. Older siblings (grades 7-8) will not be allowed to walk younger siblings to cars.

No children (other than those authorized to walk home) may walk to the upper parking lot unsupervised to wait to be picked up by parents.

The purpose of safety patrol, parent volunteers, and faculty/staff is to help enforce traffic procedures and ensure the safety of children. Please cooperate.

On rainy days, parents may park anywhere in the lower parking lot and pick up children from the classrooms. There should be no stopping or parking along the coned-off walkway.

Room Parents

Room Parents for the 2007-2008 School Year
Meet our Room Parents! They keep the spirit going at St. Martin of Tours Academy. Their assistance is invaluable coordinating each class' efforts with bake sales, Big 10 auction baskets, Grandparents' Day, Bingo kitchen duty, field trips, Open House hospitality, Walk-A-Thon, etc... Without their assistance, our school could not function as efficiently as it does.

If you would like to become a room parent, contact the school office.
